Community Mourns
Loss of Arcade Icon
AP News August 1, 2007
Goofy Kong, the somewhat-odd and offbeat gorilla featured during the
intermissions of the 80's arcade classic, Donkey Kong, has passed away today of natural causes.
He was 26. Goofy Kong was best known for his comical smirk and
rhetorical catch-phrase "How High Can You Get
?". His career spanned two decades, most of
which was spent playing second fiddle to the main gorilla, Donkey Kong.
Goofy Kong's awkward presence in a game that was dominated by more developed central characters, was never fully
understood. "He just kind of sat there", says fellow game character
Jumpman, "And sometimes there was more than one of him--really weird".
Goofy Kong's career branched out slightly when he pulled top-billing in a
off-kilter bootleg of Donkey Kong. Some saw this as a slap in
the face to the original. "He wasn't even standing on the beam right.
And the colors were all wrong", cites an insider
familiar with the project.
Goofy Kong will be replaced by Donkey Kong in the new intermission for
the upcoming Donkey Kong release, D2K: Jumpman Returns.
Family members of Goofy Kong could not be reached for comment.
